HENRY MAIN, farmer, sec. 2, Millbrook Tp., was born in Michigan, Oct. 14, 1838. His father, George Main, was born in Pennsylvania, and his mother, Margaret A. (Chandler) Main, was a natie of New York. Mr. Main lived at home with his parents and assisted on the farm until he was 22 years of age, when he went from home and worked as a farm laborer four years; then rented a farm, which he conducted three years; came to Mecosta County in the spring of 1869 and bought 100 acres of wild land in the township of Millbrook; built a board house, and proceeded to clear his land, to which he has added by purchase, and now owns 220 acres, with 120 acres under advanced improvements. Mr. Main is a Republican in faith and act. He has been Treasurer of his township nine years, Constable two years, Road Commissioner one year, and Supervisor one year. Himself and family are attendants at the Church of United Brethren. He was married in Canada, April 10, 1861, to Roxey L., daughter of Thomas and Sarah A. (hartwell) Smith, natives of Canada. Mrs. Main was born in Canada, Dec. 22, 1840. She was under the paternal care until she was fifteen, after which she depended upon her own resources. Mr. and Mrs. Main have had eleven children, ten of whom yet survive: Esther C., born June 5, 1862; Aramintha J., Dec. 24, 1863; Austin C., Aug. 3, 1865; Celestia A., Oct. 27, 1867; Lorenzo A., Aug. 14, 1869; Edward H., July 17, 1871; Walter H., May 18, 1873; Lafayette J., April 7, 1876; Elsie M., June 9, 1877; Sidney O., born April 21, 1879, died Sept. 6, 1879; Loren T., born Nov. 28, 1881. |
