John Maguire, farmer on sec 24, Green Tp., was born near Prescott, Can., in October 1812. His father Bartholomew Maguine, was a native of New York, and was in the war of 1812. His grandfather was in the Revolutionary war, in which he fought five years, he settled in the State of New York and married Eleanor Bresee. Mr. Maguire was married in the Empire State in 1855 to Mary Miller, removing soon after to Pennsylvania, where he bought a farm and reside six years. He then sold his property and returned to the State of New York. Three years later he went to Canada West and remained 12 years near Port Burwell, Elgin Co., where he was engaged in lumbering. In 1860 he located in Greenville, Montcalm Co., where he remained a year, and in the winter of 1862, came to this County, where he passed a year on the farm of A. Clark. Meanwhile he homesteaded 80 acres of land and now has 45 acres under tillage. The children of Mr. and Mrs. Maguire are these: Hugh, Francis, Emma, and Amanda E., two are deceased. Mr. Maguire was one of the early settlers and is a Democrat. |
